Records Details & Details Preview - OpenGov
about.
The Related Records feature centralizes all permits and licenses that connect to a single project, property, or applicant. Instead of managing records in isolation, staff can view, add, and organize dependencies directly within a record. My work included the details preview (right side) and preview when searching (see below).
My work:
Search & Add: Quickly search for an existing record or create a new one.
Cross-Record Copying: Copy details such as applicant data, location, or attachments into related records.
Details View: Right side detail and relationship panel.
challenge.
Making Related Records Usable in Context
Previously, staff had to leave the Related Records tab to confirm details, which created friction and increased the risk of linking the wrong record. The lack of inline previews and contextual actions meant:
Extra clicks and page loads just to validate information.
Increased potential for data-entry errors when linking or copying details.
A slower process for staff working on large projects with many related permits.
The challenge was to bring rich, contextual record information into the same space where staff were searching, reviewing, and linking records — without overwhelming the UI.
result.
By implementing the details preview panel and inline search previews, staff can now:
Search with Confidence: Quickly find and preview existing records before linking.
Act Without Leaving the Screen: Copy applicant data, location info, and attachments directly from the details panel.
Stay Oriented: View relationships and workflow previews in context, reducing back-and-forth navigation.
